Learn From Minions: Teamwork Style

They’re yellow, they love bananas, and they glow in the dark.  What’s not to love about the animated Minions from Despicable Me?

Ok, so they might be a little silly but they always work hard, innovate, complete seemingly impossible tasks, and enjoy themselves in the process. Without them, Gru would never succeed in achieving his goals.

What can Gru and the minions teach us about building a team that works together?

  •  Set clear direction and explain your goals.  Have absolute transparency with regards to the end goal, even if that end goal is stealing the moon.
  • Celebrate success together and give credit.  Use the word ‘we’ more often. Great success calls for celebration!
  • Don’t stop employees from having FUN.  The minions find things to enjoy even during the most mundane of tasks. Their goals are achieved and their enjoyment is seen as a sign of a highly integrated, functional team.
  • Be appreciative of innovation.  If a team member presents you with a fart gun, would you be impressed with their innovation, or furious at them?
  • Delegate responsibility.  Hand out clear tasks and step back. Keep your door open and if no one comes to visit, take the time to see what’s happening.

Life can be hard and boring at times. Wear a hat made of fruit, hula dance, sing the “Banana Potato Song” or run around wearing flashing lights on your head! If there’s one thing minions have taught us well, it’s the importance of having a good laugh at ourselves every once in a while.
